Northern Rock Card Charges

ive got a northern rock cc which is now managed by the co op bank, my balance is around 4k.
Could i have some advice about the fairness of the monthly charge, this months statement has just arrived and i have been informed that the monthly fee is rising from £2 to £4 thats on top of an intrest rate rise.
I have not spent on this account for 4 years as it was a joint account with my now ex wife, as i am not using the card i feel it is unfair to charge me a monthly fee.
Is it worth me getting in touch to argue the charge?
I have a mortgage with my new partner and equifax tell me i have a "good" credit rating.
I am rather apprehensive to transfer the balance to another card provider as recent applications for credit through the halifax bank have been refused even though i earn 30k per annum and have never been overdrawn
Thanx in advance

If you have an outstanding balance then you are 'using' the card. How much are you putting on this card every month?
Get a copy of your credit files.
Your credit card provider has the right to impose a fee if they want to just as you have the right to take your business elswhere.

    thanx for replying ejones
i have not used this card in over four years, and i usually pay a tenner over the minimum payment which is now £80.
When i was refused a loan, a credit card and a mortgage from the halifax (Applied months apart for each product) i wrote to complain, i was told that i had failed their internal credit score.
I have since reverted back to my 20 year old lloyds tsb current account and been offered all of the above products.
It is intresting to point out that in the past year there has been 66k put through my account and i still failed all the internal scores for the halifax ,it appeared to me that no matter how long i carried on banking with them i would never pass their rating

So move! Apply to LTSB for their longest interest free card and try to pay off a lot more than the minimum otherwise this debt will be with you for a long long time to come.
