Please help - I think I have a virus!

I have avast and malwarebytes installed on my computer. A message started to pop up from avast over and over saying that a threat had been detected. I peformed a scan with malwarebytes and then it asked me to restart my computer.

Since I restarted it I can't open either malwarebytes or avast, I keep getting a message saying "this programme is blocked by group policy"

I did a google search and people have mentioned posting log files but I don't have a clue about that sort of thing. I don't know how to do a system restore either.

I've downloaded Hitmanpro and Spybot but I still can't access avast and malwarebytes.

Can somebody please help me??

Since the first question is probably going to be "which version of Windows are you using", you might save time by divulging that now.

I really think people should be legally obliged to take a test before being let loose on a computer! While you are pratting about, your PC is probably sending the virus to everyone in your address book.

Thank you so much for your helpful comment.

You're right, of course. Everybody should be required to take some sort of test before being let loose on a computer. Perhaps you could write to your MP and suggest it? In fact, why stop there? Perhaps people who drive cars should be required to gain qualifications in mechanical engineering before they are let loose behind the wheel?

Now I'm just going to get back to my pratting about. I like to get in at least 2 hours of pratting about before bedtime.

Thanks. I've done a system restore and everything seems to have gone back to normal.

Love it ... but information is helpful ... it's like "shall I take my umbrella out today?" well the first question will be why? where do you live ... the second will be haven't you got a Mac? etc. However I am glad you are sorted , you probably won't read this until you have pratted about before breakfast

You may want to run Malwarebytes again and maybe Adwarecleaner http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ first

I'm looking forward to the next instalment entitled "Help, my friends are saying I sent them as virus" followed by "Help, I lost all my photos and I don't have a backup"...

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I haven't sent them a virus yet. Don't worry, I'll be sure to inform you when that happens.

I appreciate your concern about my photos, but please don't worry. Everything on my lap top is backed up onto an external hard drive every week. Everything apart from the photos I had taken when I was younger and I needed the money. I don't need a back up copy of those because they're all over the internet.

Thank you. I re-installed Malwarebytes and will try the Adwarecleaner too.
