Comparison Websites

Has anyone found that when they go on these sites and compare electric or gas the comparisons from the companies offer are often not cheaper even though they say they are. I'm on E7 and the top cheapest did have cheaper day and night rates but the daily charges were dearer. So when I put in my own meter readings although the electric is cheaper it works out dearer in the long run with there daily charge.

No. The quotes given by the comparison sites will accommodate the daily standing charge and the number of units you specify. So they should be accurate.

Double check your figures - for ease, make sure you use as inputs usage in kWh rather than pounds. And check the proportion of day and night units being quoted is the same.

(One other possibility is if you are on a fixed tariff and it is coming to an end - part of the quote assumes you are defaulting back to the standard tariff.)

My unit rates at the moment :- 6.78 night rate 14.66 day rate and daily charge 18.9. Comparison sight reckons 6.44 night rate 12.25 day rate but a daily charge of 23.01 would be cheaper. Ive put in my kW usage but my tariff I'm on now still comes out £30 ish cheaper than another electric company the comparison site has chosen who says its going to be £33 cheaper than mine. How?

Is there a discount of some kind, for online only etc.?
  • The same discount as the one I have on my electric already. I agree the electric would be cheaper but that's a bit misleading if the daily charge is dearer isn't it?

There will be a tipping point where a certain amount of usage with be enough that the savings will offset the approx. £15 a year more standing charge. Since the difference is only £15, something must be amiss for the old/current one to be £30 cheaper with more expensive kwh prices. Depending on your usage, the new tariff being £33 cheaper does sound more likely. In the absence of any other factors, the savings of the cheaper kwh prices would total £48.
  • Sorry. My mistake. Sorted it now... Feel dumb now :o. New comparison was £30 cheaper. Is it worth changing to save this though over a year ?

Only you can decide that really :) some people will switch at a low saving, others set themselves a personal minimum
  • It was flow energy that was the cheapest (no exit fees either). Just read a few replies on this site about users trying to transfer to this company. Will give it a thought though...

After checking Flow Energys website and using there up to date tarrif charges im going to only be better off by £23.60 per annum. The comparison site had out of date tarrif amounts. Think I will stick with my current supplier as I will only be paying £1.96 per month more. Will try and cut back to maybe counteract this.
The top saving company had a £30 get out fee.
The second saving company was Flow Energy
The third was Ovo but with only a 19p per year saving and again a £30 exit fee which isn't worth the hastle of changing.
And the fourth was my current supplier.......

Are you sure you calculated the Economy 7 night use percentage correctly for the calculator on the Flow web site? And did you account for VAT when you manually compared rates? The Flow Thames Economy 7 tariff rates are the same for 2014 and 2015 and are fixed so there's no excuse for a comparison site getting them wrong. Which site were you using? Try a different comparison site (I just checked uswitch and the Flow rates there are correct).
