House building

A chap is building a bungalow across the road from us - he has spent almost two years so far and still has not got the roof finished !!
I don't understand why - but he is currently fitting sheets / boards on the roof above the roof timbers - under the (eventually to be fitted) tiles - I can't see any felt at all !!
Has anyone got any idea why he is doing this ?

    Sarking?

Building methods have moved on so far, there's a million way to build a house now. Boards are also the best way of insulating a roof, as well as making the roof space habitable.

This stuff is a sarking/insualtion hybrid.

There's also amazing stuff called SIPs, but because you've mentioned it has rafters, I think it's sarking.

I believe that in Scotland, sarking is always done using a sheet material. Something to do with the stronger winds found up there. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Probably some form of insulated board. He may want to utilise the roof space for something and is using the board to achieve the u value without filling his loft with wool.

    Felt is so 1970's
  • I think he's probably trying to make his own idea on how he can build his own home with the best he can. It is his decision to utilize the roof.

He has now tiled 3 of the sides - evidently, the 4th (South facing) roof side - I am told that he is fitting "home made" solar panels.....
(water heating - I assume) - he has underfloor heating on the ground floor !!
This is extremely interesting watching a house being built from scratch !!

I just don't understand why it is an issue to you?, it's his home, he can do the internals anyway he wishes as long as the whole package complies??
