I said you need to check not that it necessarily applies. If you're posting to the Canary Islands which are part of Spain then it counts as a 'special territory' like the Channel Islands and is subject to excise duty and import VAT if the value of the item is over £15. Better to check than to wrongly assume there's no such charges imposed!

The Canaries are not simply 'part of Spain' they are a Spanish Autonomous Territory, as you well know. The OP said Spain, not The Canaries.

I'm afraid the address for the Canaries says Spain at the end e.g.

Urbanizaci!n Montaña Roja, s/n, 35580 Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, Las Palmas, España

I'm trying to be helpful while people like you are aren't and could land a MSEr in hot water. I said to check as it would be easy to look quickly and think that a Canary Islands address is Spain. What harm is there in checking? None. What harm is there in wrongly assuming something? Potentially a lot.

Obviously, this isn't of use to the original poster now but could be useful for other people who come across the thread.

I'm sorry but you are wrong there. That is not an argument Spain has tried at all.

Some spanish officials claimed informally (but never officially and it was never enacted - because they know they would loose in court), that they could implement a 'congestion charge' that just happened to coincide with the border, then exempt certain persons from this. There are so many legal issues with this, they know it is a non-starter.

There was a previous proposal by a Mayor of La Linea, who proposed a congestion charge for anyone travelling through the town to and from Gibraltar but then a later proposal proposed by the Spanish Foreign Minister who said a 50 Euro border crossing charge to compensate fishermen would be imposed due to Gibraltar creating an artificial reef restricting the movement of fish. He even said Spanish residents would be exempt from the charge.

Spain obviously wanted the artificial reef to be removed and thought the threat of the 50 Euro charge would prompt them in to action. However, it didn't as Britain and Gibraltar argued their proposals would have been illegal which Spain denied.
