WARNING Tax disc renewal

Options
Hi I am new to this forum. I wanted to let everyone know about my experience renewing my car tax disc online. There are sites that both pretend to be and look like the DVLA website and I have been duped by one of these. The site will charge you money on top of the cost of the Tax disc, in my case £40. The site that I used was taxdisc-direct.co.uk, but I have been told by DVLA that there are other sites too, so please share with your friends and family to make them aware. I have notified trading standards and they will be making a case against them on the basis of consumer misrepresentation. Trading standards have also made me aware that there are sites operating like this for Driving license, passport, EHIC. If you are due to replace any of these documents in the near future be extra careful that you are on the official site and not one of these copycat sites.

OP - Did you have the reminder letter from the DVLA?

This letter normally has the web address and I always type it in, instead of Googling the website, to be sure I've got the right one.

How old is it? If it was made before 1st Jan 1974, the RFL is free, as long as the taxation class of the vehicle has been changed to Historic.

The site that I used was taxdisc-direct.co.uk,

This is written on their homepage,

"You may find the following information useful:
By proceeding to apply online, you have agreed to our terms and conditions. We comply with Data Protection Act and assure that this data will only be used to process your application. You will be asked to provide your personal information, you must review the Terms of Business and Privacy Policy. Our service is not connected to or affiliated with the GOV.UK or Driving Vehicle Licence Agency and acts as an agent processing the application. These services are available from other government sources without the additional service fee"

Why did you ignore that, it's there in plain site not hidden in any way. They are cashing in on people's laziness.
    It's someone else's fault.

I recently renewed our car tax disc, but typed in the URL from information on the renewal forms.

Sites such as those mentioned should never have been allowed to operate. Hope that the watchdog are closing them down.

    Thanks for the warning.
