Zanussi Washer needs new dial?

My zanussi washer F1245W needs a new dial, I think. It is getting difficult to turn it so it is on the right programme, it is jerky and stiff. It is quite old so I don't want to spend a lot on it. I can buy a new dial for under £20, does anyone know if it is easy to fit and if that will fix the problem?
This is the part.

That should just be a push fit on. But not sure (if it is stiff) that it will solve the problem-it may be the lever underneath that is faulty. Remove the old one first and test.
