Taking 3 Weeks off In Work?

Options
I am entitled to 6 weeks off per year at work, and I am thinking of taking 3 weeks off in June to go on holiday, and another 3 weeks off in August to go on another holiday.

Am I entitled to take so many off at once, or do you think this may become a problem. I am thinking of doing this every year.

    Depends on your contract.

I've worked for companies where it states more than 10 working days cannot be taken in one go without special permission and will only be granted in exceptional circumstances.

A company has to legally give you holiday but there's no law that says you can dictate when you take it.If a company chose to they could decide when you take all your days although few do outside of Christmas or summer shutdowns.

  • Thanks. Do many companies have that rule in place as I have never heard of that type of contract before?

I think it is common in many places to be allowed 3 weeks together only for a special occasion eg a honeymoon or special holiday. Doing it twice in one holiday year might be pushing it but just ask - they may have no problem with it at all. My husband is allowed only 10 days which we have stretched to 11 in summer by including a bank holiday. I did once allow someone 4 weeks in a row but that was a real one off and did then result in her "borrowing" holiday from the next leave year when she had some other important thing to do and no leave left.

It's a matter that rests between you and your employer.

Every employer can have different rules and most will need line manager to agree the timing of any holidays which can vary between departments.

Nobody on here can answer your question.

Short answer is probably no you are not entitled to take 6 weeks during the summer and very close together,

    Have you asked your boss

Check your contract and ask your boss. My employer does allow long holidays. I've had 6weeks off in a row, managed this as 4weeks from one years holiday entitlement and two from the following year. Most of my workmates take three weeks off together so you may be allowed.

There's certainly no legal restraint in you doing this, and in the Higher Education sector many people do take the bulk of their holidays during the summer when there is often a lull in teaching activities. But it depends completely on what your employer allows. One thing to watch out for is that some employers are reluctant to allow leave to be taken before it's accrued, so your holiday year dates may have a bearing on what requests will be accepted.

My OH, works in a job, which is seasonally busier in the winter than the summer. He cannot take more than 2 weeks off together and cannot take 2 weeks off together between September and December. A max of 2 people in each dept off at the same time too.

A lot of companies are like that.

Speak to your HR dept, or manager.

6 weeks so close together might be an issue for other staff, depending on how many people can take leave at any one time.

Whilst allowing staff to have 3 weeks for special occasions and if no-one else wants any of those particular weeks, August tends to be quite popular for people with children. I'd be unlikely to agree all those 6 weeks, because it would be unfair on the rest of the team in my workplace.
The practicalities for you will depend on your specific workplace. However you also need to consider the arrangements around Christmas and bank holidays as some companies require staff to save some leave to cover the period they are closed.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

As everyone else has said, it really depends on what your employment contract says and how flexible your boss is.

When I was employed (I'm freelance now) I took 3 - 4 week holidays a couple of times. Even though my contract said that I was only entitled to a maximum of two weeks off in one go, my boss was flexible as long as I did a proper handover of the projects I was working on. I also gave them lots of notice, which can make a big difference in this situation.

So the short answer is you need to talk to your boss. Before you do so, you might find it easier to win them over if you think about what you could do to make life easier for your colleagues while you're away.

For instance, you might offer to work extra hours the week before, put together a handover document, etc ... all depends what your job is really.
