I'm sure there are a couple of websites that are to enable people with spare space to rent it out for things like this. Try storenextdoor.com. I can't think of the other one I saw as its a while since I looked at it.
Many thanks to everyone who posts competitions and works so hard to provide all the answers!

Think hard about what you're storing to minimise how much space you really need - are there items there which will cost you more to store than to bin now and buy again, new, in the future.

You will always have stuff in storage longer than you anticipate.

I've recently had stuff in storage, having got it into there I then looked around for a better/cheaper/nearer solution and moved it after a few months. I had no furniture though.

well yes - 2 large flat screen tvs and surround sound equipments, large speakers desk and chair and 2 computers / printer and hifi equipment and 3 bags of large clothes.

if they where not worth anything then i would donate to charity shop but they are worth a bit

My advice also, if you've the time/ability is to find some CHEAP storage racks and put the racks into the storage, then put the boxed stuff onto the racks.... makes it easier at some future point to dig out the ones at the bottom. If your stuff is in boxes then it's difficult to stack them more than 3 high in any case before the bottom ones start getting squashed.... Ikea do some cheap ones if you're close to one of those ... and they can be reused in your new home at some point maybe.

If I did it again and had the luxury of time to buy/build those racks I'd get 3-4 of them.... without them you end up filling the floor of the storage instead of going upwards.... then you can't get anything out piece by piece.... better to try to plan storage round the edges and a walking gap up the middle.

Also, don't be fooled by the "we've got the tallest units, 7' high" - unless you've really got a piece of furniture that will require 7' (eg a sofa on its side or a grandfather clock) you won't be using any height above 4' or so, for the reasons given earlier.

What about somebody with a garage that they themselves only use for storage? If you know somebody like this then they might be willing to help you out if you offer a reasonable amount.

Don't do what somebody who wanted to store furniture in my garage did recently & offer the princely sum of £1.25 week. I hope they managed to find a storage company offering those sort of silly prices.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
