DIY Conservatory blinds / curtains

Hi looking for a solution for creating shade in our conservatory! It gets extremely bright and hot in there in summer sun and very cold in winter weather.

The windows are UPVC glass and the roof is UPVC frames but the panels (6 of them) are made of a type of corrugated plastic I think.

We rent the property so arn't in a position to have the expensive blinds that are on sale. We couldn't afford their prices anyway.

So we are looking for alternatives like cheap but decent slatted on vertical blinds or even curtains. Ideally we would prefer some sort of blackout curtains or blinds on the roof but as the roof is flat and not angled so we can't think of a way to hang them.

To cut costs and DIY we have thought of using towels, sheets and second hand curtains etc suspended on string, net wire or tracks / poles but were finding it difficult to think of a sensible and cheap remedy. Can anyone advise please?

Thanks in advance. :)

We discovered a temporary solution of using cardboard from old boxes cut to size and velcroed onto the ceiling as it holds better than sticky tape!

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
    I have a similar problem.
Found this Blinds in a Box company, they were on Dragons Den.

They are primarily for windows though and I like you want to to the roof.
At the moment I'm using a roll of greenhouse screening plastic sheet held in place by bamboo sticks!!
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • Corex ..... trade name.

8 ft x 4 ft corrugated plastic comes in various colours. Get it in white from Selco or most builders merchants used for masking floors etc.

Plasticsdirect type places sell it. You only need 3-5mm thick, it can be cut with a stanley knife or scissors to shape. Double sided tape on the frame of the rood struts, done.

Other alternative is scaffolding safety mesh. (ebay), give dappled shade and should be put on the outside.

You can buy 3 vertical blinds for £99 in some places. Limited colours but cheap as chips and the best 'varied' option for light, shade, privacy.
