plasterboard fix

Hi All,

I am a noob on fixing plasterboard.

Looking on the net , I understand here is what I need to fix it:

Drywall saw
plasterboard piece
piece of wood or plasterboard to use as support
screws to fix the plasterboard patch to the current plasterboard
drywall tape

now what do I need to fill the edges of the patch ( there will be small gaps in there)

after this can I go straight to painting or do I need to apply something else?

many thanks

Just need some plaster filler, can buy tubs cheap from the like of Wickes/B&Q. Fill the gaps with a smooth flat blade (I use a wallpaper scraper) let ot dry and then sand flush.
