Brighten a brown bathroom?

We have just bought our first house and we complete next week:j

The bathroom has been redone in the last couple of years and we don't have the money or inclination to re-tile at the moment. It is completely tiled in beige and brown, its nice, but with a dark brown wood type lino too it looks a little dark and samey.

Could I brighten it up with accessories in a brighter colour? I'm unsure what will go nicely with brown in a bathroom. Does sage or pale limey green sound nice or awful?

I'd go for really bright towels and accessories, in lime, coral or turquoise (one of these at a time!). If you have room for it, a picture on the wall can liven the look too. For example, you could have a seascape and blue or green towels, etc.

Check your lighting is reasonably bright too as that can make a difference.

We could do bright lime, not sure how to put up a picture on tiles, might end up with a big hole!

Any chance of replacing the lino with a paler colour to lighten up the atmosphere?

And yes, accessories - sagey or lime green, cream, duck egg blue, hot pink, white etc? Choose a colour and build a load of accessories around that. My personal fave would be duck egg.

Yes, replacing the lino is a possibility, but figured a bathroom mat could be good in the interim.

accessories, mirrors - you can also buy vinyl stickers to cover tiles with, which might be a cheap, temporary option.

IKEA and others do cheap, washable cotton rugs so a white/cream one could lighten it up.

In terms of hanging pictures, you can put fixings up but if you are wary of drilling into tiles you can get sticky-back hooks.
