Auto numbering, Microsoft Word

Can anyone please help. I've typed a list of 12 items. The first 9 look fine bu when it gets to double numbers there is a gap between the number and the first word. I can't get the cursor to type next to the number. I seem to remember having this problem in my working days and the typist helping me. I can't remember if she turned auto numbering off or set tabs. I don't seem to be able to do either. It's not critical but would look much better.
Thanks in advance

If the rulers are on there will be markers on the horizontal ruler to show the indent and you can drag and drop where you want them. If I remember correctly it will be the lower one for the text (the upper one will be for the autonumber)0

Thanks, no joy. It's just on the numbers from 10 up ,which don't line up. There is a space between the 2nd digit and the first word where I'm unable to type. I've tried to copy and paste on here but that doesn't work either. Altering the margin doesn't make a difference

Try a different font. I normally use Verdana, but in a numbered list there's a gap between the full stop after the number and the first letter in the first 9 items, but after that there's no gap (so the opposite problem to what you're seeing). When I change it to Times New Roman then there is a gap between the full stop and first letter for all items. Although in both cases the first letter always lines up.0

The reason is you are using a font which each letter/number is not the same size. If you use a tab instead of a space it may help you. But the best method is to use the Word auto numbering/bullets which is shown on the top menu bar with 1 2 3 with a line at the side of them. It will automatically start numbering, and when you press return, then it goes to the next number. If you want a line between each point, just hold shift down when you press return the first time.

Why is it I have less time now I am retired then when I worked?0 -
I always do my lists prefixing them with 1/. TAB, 2/. TAB etc. That way even at 10/. TAB everything lines up. There is a small, constant gap after each number and the first letter but the first letters all line up.0
