Help - have Openoffice and been emailed a Word document

Hoping someone can help me as I'm pretty clueless with all of this!
I don't have Microsoft Office on my laptop - I use OpenOffice.
Been using this for a few years with no problem but I'm now stuck with something.
I've been sent a Word document (part of a job application). I need to save this, edit (add information, etc), and then return it by email.
I don't know if I'm missing something but I can't work out how to save the file. When I try to save it to my computer, I click "browse" but I'm not being given the option of saving it in OpenOffice as a text document.
Does anyone know what I can (if anything)?
I'm thinking I might have to download a free Microsoft Office trial but I'd rather not do that (it asks for payment details).

If you just save the file to your documents. Then go into your documents and you should be able to open the Microsoft Word document. Open Office can open Microsoft Word documents and also save files in there Microsoft format. If this doesn't work then right click on the document and click open with. Then it should come up with Open Office for you to click on and it will open the file for you. I hope this helps.0
