I read this as the house proceeds are to be split into 10 shares - 6 to your mother, 2 to his daughter and 2 to his son. If your mother had predeceased him, her 6 shares were to be split between his daughter and son, who would also inherit one another's shares if either predeceased him.

It shows how easy it is to make a mess of homemade wills.

I read it as Mum inherits all 6 shares (the total value of the house) but, if she didn't survive the 28 days, her six shares were to be given 3 each to the son and daughter.

I wonder if he copied the 6 shares bit from someone else's will where the money was to be divided among six people if the beneficiary didn't survive.

But the counter argument is the house doesn't exist any more - so can't be sold and the proceeds divided

I wonder if it actually is such a mess and not in fact what he intended? Did he want to exclude OP's Mum? Probably not but you can't be certain

Pickings for the lawyers either way.

Now you say it like that I have changed my mind to this.

I mentioned before it makes no sense to talk about 6 shares then becoming 2 shares.
