Eon estimated bill

Hi,
I wondered if anyone could suggest anything to help me with my current situation or any advice. I moved into my new house on 29 November 2013. While Npower set up my gas and electricity account, Eon supplied the house until 1 January 2014 - so for one month.
I was away on 1 January and didn't take a reading and then I (stupidly) forgot to do it. I have just received a bill for £145 from Eon covering the one month I was with them. This is far higher than I have ever paid for one month's gas and electric. It is based on their estimate of what my readings would have been on 1 January.
I have just phoned them up to ask them to review it and they explained to me that there isn't much they can do because I did not supply an actual reading. They told me that they have come up with my estimate reading based on the fuel that was consumed in the house in the same month in 2012 - so by previous tenants! I gave them my current readings, but was told there isn't much hope of an adjustment because the current reading is not a winter period one.
Is there anything I can do to challenge this estimated bill?
thanks,
Richard

Is it feasible for you to move to E.On? Maybe that would enable you to smooth out the payments over a longer period. In any event, you definitely don't want to be with NPower.0

Don't worry about it.
Even if you could successfully get the estimated meter reading on 1 Jan reduced, what you don't pay E.On you'll end up paying nPower anyway. (give or take a few pennies)0 -

What did nPower use as readings to start your contract with them? As you clearly appreciate, estimates are best avoided, but so long as your final "reading" with E.On and the first one with nPower were the same, then while you may have paid for more than you used, it will even itself out once actual readings are used with nPower. If nPower's rates are higher than E.On's, then you could have effectively gained with a bit of cheaper energy.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. Something isn't right here.
When you Switch supplier, the new supplier will ask you shortly before the change-over date for your meter readings and tell you the actual date.
Despite the time differential between you giving these readings and the change date, it is these readings that new supplier passes on to the old and form the basis for the old suppliers Final Bill, and new suppliers First bill - The old suppliers Final Bill should not be estimated
Your choice of Switching to n'power may make sense on cost, but certainly not on the efficiency of their back-office systems and it's possible they have failed to pass on the meter readings, but this is not your problem
Write to Eon, heading the letter Complaint, demanding a Final Bill based on the correct changeover readings0 -
Morning Richard
Welcome to the forum
Did you provide a meter reading to us from the day you moved in? Or is this estimated as well?
When you change supplier the customer would normally give their start reads to the new supplier, they would then pass them on to us electronically.
Are you final reads used by us the same as the reads to open your account from with Npower?
If so, then you'll only pay for the energy that you use and there isn't any over billing. Even if it is estimated.
We can't change an estimated read though, if we don't have an actual.
We may be able to set up an arrangement to let you clear the balance, if this would help a bit.
If you do need any more help from me, please just ask.

Hi dogshome,
I read it as the OP didn't provide any reads to Npower as they were away and this is the reason they've been estimated.
If there is an actual read for us to use, then yes we can re-bill. Or raise an ARD (agreed read dispute)
Hopefully they'll come back and let me know if I've got the wrong end of the stick.
Thanks
