Play/pause, 30sec rewind, jump directly to any part of the programme, and a variety of other onscreen (on the iPad screen) doodads ... how much if this can be done from a TV remote?

So it's a half-arsed PVR that necessitates the purchase of a £300+ iPad?

...and funnels one's viewing preferences to Google in the process?

    It's not a PVR. It has no 'R', it's a streaming device.

The OP can decide for him or herself whether or not they want to control it from Android, iPad, iPhone or laptop. They may well have one of these already. You do realise that controlling the Chromecast is just one thing that these devices do? They have other uses as well.

I've seen no evidence or suggestion that Google are storing my viewing preferences, but even if they were, I'm not bothered that they know that I've been watching ten-year-old episodes of Battlestar Galactica for the last four weeks .... what's the issue here?

Wow started a bit of a debate here...

I have been doing lots of reading and like another member said the new models do support freetime which allows you to reply shows from the last 7 days. things you would get normally with Tivo, Sky etc.

I currently use the Panasonic android and ipad app on my current tv set and works a treat and would use this with the new set.

Plasma is a technology that has been phased out by most manufacturers so LED or the more expensive 4k or OLED is my other options but because of cost and because I am not convinced the top technology is there at the moment my only choice is really LED considering all the smart features I am looking for...

I have been looking in places like currys just to look at the range but probably buy from Richer sounds or sevenoaks as they CS is far better and warranties will be included in the price rather than an extra cost like currys no worries!
