Removal of a conservatory

Hi
Looking for some advice we are planning to remove our existing conservatory which was added to the property and did not require planning permission before we purchased the house. Our local council (Salford) are telling us that we need to submit full planning permission with architect drawings etc as any demolition requires full planning permission. This just seems ridiculous and completely unnecessary. So they want me to show them drawings of the house with a conservatory and then without? I went on the gov planning portal and under demolition general it stated that demolition did not normally require planning permission but they said this applies to commercial properties. I feel like they don't know what they are talking about as every time I ring they have to go and check with someone or ring me back when they have found out.
Any advice would be really appreciated thanks.

How do the council know what you're planning?"If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0

I think its a case of the council not knowing what there talking about.
I used to practice as a chartered surveyor and a few years ago a client built a house on some farmland, whilst I was with the planning officer on site I was explaining where the house was going, the garden etc... I then said how that area will stay as grazing land he then shot round and said you can't do that it has to stay as farmland..."talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish" - Euripides0 -
We are also planning an extension which they have confirmed that we don't need planning permission for as it's within permitted development but because we said we are removing a conservatory for the extension that part apparently needs planning permission!0

Never heard such a thing. You don't need planning for your new extension, so just get on with it and forget the planning department.0

Unless my local planning office are wrong then your lot are talking nonsense. We had our conservatory taken down and the builders are outside building our new extension as I type (very noisy at the moment as they are putting in the floor beams).
No planning permission was needed for either job, the build is covered under permitted development rights. We have building regs approved which clearly stated demolition of existing conservatory and build of new extension, the planning officer never mentioned anything about the conservatory demolition and neither did our architect."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0
