Need help to move in to house, where to ask?

Hello
I had to leave my home with my two years old as my husband was abusive. we are in a refuge at the moment. I found a nice flat (which is difficult in the area where we are) for a very reasonable (I can say low) rent. But there is a problem - it needs some painting and a carpet change. The carpet there is very old, it actually comes out of the floor and you can see the huge amount of dust under it. My LO is allergic to dust. He gets all spotty, then scratches the spots and they turn nusty. The council is already helping me with a deposit bond, rent in advance and an agency fees. I got 380£ to live on until I have my benefits come through. I would like to change the carpets there before we move in. We also need furniture, but I would get it in time. I just want to live in a clean healthy place. Is it any help out there that I can turn to please.
Just to answer your questions - the landlord is not gonna change the carpet as it is ok for them and if I do not take the flat there are plenty people who would. as the rent is really low.
Any help and advice will be very much appreciated. I also see the CAB on Tuesday and see what they say.

Try your local Freecycle group.

I've given away perfectly good TV's, carpets, dishwashers. washing machines/tumble dryers.0 -
Borrow a hoover and give the carpet a good clean to get rid of the dust until you can source another one.0

Freecycle and some councils have a homestart sort of warehouse. Also Morrisons will hire a carpet steam cleaner. You only need it for a day. Also check the landlord doesn't mind you replacing the carpet as it might be his pride and joy later and he'll want some money off you. Just have to grin and bear it for a while. Better a flat with problems that can be sorted rather than no flat. Good luck. :cool:0

CAB may be able to advise you of local charities that help to furnish the homes of those previously homeless.
Budgeting loan

Crisis loans have been scrapped in central government and moved to local councils or other bodies. I'm not aware of the criteria for being eligible for one.

You must get the landlord's written permission to take up any carpets.
The most important thing at the moment is that you and your child have a place to stay.
If the carpets can be lifted then hoover underneath and then hire the Rug Doctor to give them a good clean.
Do not spend a lot of money on new carpets as you will not be able to take them when you leave. Just make sure everything is clean and safe.
CAB will have information about charities that can help and a budgeting loan will provide the essentials.0
