IKEA catalogue page 88...

Hi all,

Would appreciate opinions on the room colour ( dark blue ) on page 88 of current Ikea cat.

I really fancy it for our lounge which is a large room and faces west so gets plenty of natural light.

My missus is dead against it as she says it will make the room look too gloomy, but I reckon because it gets so much light it will be fine.

Currently the walls are all magnolia, as were all the other rooms in our flat, but we are gradually changing them and have been in agreement on other rooms, but got a bit of a Mexican standoff on this one :D

Appreciate feedback from neutral parties !

If I get away with the blue, I will probably go in for 1 or 2 of the yellow cabinets on same page, walnut ( veneer) table is nice also but overpriced imho..

Thanks !

Just remember YOU are going to have to live with your wife after its painted and after 50 years of being married the one thing I learnt was wives have a way of reminding us poor men that if they are not happy we will suffer it the end.
Good luck whatever you choose to do but I have found keeping the peace and excepting the wifes' choices makes for a FAR EASIER life in the long term.

Yep can relate to that :D

I must be getting brave in my old age as I still want to try that colour...

whats the worst that can happen, I just have to paint over it again ( or pay someone to ) :D

Gonna call her bluff and get some match pots :p

Haven't got the catalogue but I think you've hit the nail on the head, have an agreement that you can paint it, leave it for a few weeks to see it in different lights and then if she or you really hate it you will paint over it. I think win:win if she hates it at least you got to see it for a couple of weeks, if she loves it you will just have to be graceful in winning...certainly don't point it out, we don't like to be told we may have been wrong :rotfl:

My experience is that paint colours do vary, depending on light, we chose Orchid white for one of our rooms, looks lovely a warm cream colour, so we decided it would be great for our dining room. Husband started painting all the cutting in and I thought he'd bought the wrong colour, but it was from exactly the same tin as we had used before but in this room due to it having so much light it looked like primrose yellow. I was so shocked at how the light changed the colour so much.

Dark colours make a strong statement, and can be hard to paint over, usually taking several coats if you are restoring to something lighter/neutral.

For resale, the market definitely favours light, neutral decor.

Before we bought this place we were renting for 6 years, sick to death of magnolia ( that's one thing we definitely agree on )

We are not going to be moving for a fairly long time, if ever - unless our numbers come up - so I can worry about neutralising the d!cor then I guess, but I take your point on that to be sure.

Light and other things in a room have an effect. We did our bedroom in a light cream. However, the green carpet made the Wales look light green.

Years ago, DS's room was meant to have one yellow wall, with the others white. When we put a blue carpet down, the yellow wall became green!

Dark blue is a colour that doesn't work well in the light this far into the northern hemisphere. You would have to be very careful that it didn't look very cold and bleak.

Test with Paint pot samplers and some sheets of A4 paper. Paint the paper and see how it looks at different times of day in different walls.

We were going to go for a deep red on a couple of walls. Decorator advised against it and when we tested it didn't look right, with lower light it turned dark brown. He also mentioned that dark colours take a lot of coats to get right. This was proven as we choose a dark grey instead and it took 6 coats before he was happy the colour was even. The light grey took three.

    Hi,

    Sofas are dark brown leather.

Carpet is beige ( its same stuff throughout flat, must be the original from when built in 2003 ish - took it up in bathroom & ensuite to fit karndean and its poor quality foam back stuff, so will be upgrading with better quality and top drawer underlay )
