Lawn Help/Tips - Big Bald Patches

Hi all,

Is my lawn after I cut the grass today, yes it's my neglect that's led to this but this year I've resolved to try and look after the garden a bit more.
The dog 'uses' this area which I think has lead to this, along with me being very lax in cutting the grass.
I'm asking for any money-saving tips to try and recover this lawn a bit (there are quite a few patches like this) without me having to resort to one of those firms that go around in shiny vans who promise to fix your lawn.
Any helpful advise (with the exception of tying a knot in the dog) greatly welcome!
Regards,
Andy

Looks quite boggy, compacted and shaded. Increase the drainage by peircing lots of holes using a garden fork, fill the holes by brushing in some sand. Add in plenty of grit to some top soil and re-seed the patches using a shade tollerant grass blend and this should be fine.
Add some 'dog rocks' to your dogs water bowl it nutrilises their urine and stops patches of grass dying.0
