Who should keep the paperwork if builder buys goods?

hi there have just had some work done and the builder bought the extractor fan and fitted it. I have asked for the guarantee in case it develops a fault. He says my guarantee is him and that he needs the invoice for VAT receipt. he has registered the fan online. I want the invoice and guarantee so I know that a new product has been fitted and that I have been charged a reasonable price compared to what he paid. Is this the norm?

    Yes, this is normal

The price he paid is irrelevant, I presume you accepted his quote or estimate and he has installed as per spec

yes he has but as I paid for the materials they are surely my property? I could have bought them myself online for (slightly) less than I paid him which I'm not quibbling about but I would then have had the receipt

He has supplied and fitted, if it goes wrong then the builder would repair or replace at his cost. If you the customer supplied then you would have to pa again to remove and replace

Profit is not a dirty word!!

Guarantee forms only require a proof of purchase, the amount can be blanked out.

The builder paid for the base materials.

You paid for the builder to supply and fit a fully working system.

He is right and it is perfectly normal. I need the original Vat receipts because the items are bought by me and resold. I need to pricide the purchase receipt and the invoice for the forward sale.

If you but something from a shop, you have your receipt from them, not their receipt to buy it wholesale.

Why do people think that builders are different from any other business?

Doozergirl is correct. The invoice he paid is nothing to do with you. If there is a problem its up to him to deal with it.

And how much he paid for it is again not your concern.

If you don't like builders doing supply and fit, then get them to do labour only. Then you have the hassle of going to the suppliers, sourcing and specing the correct one, taking it back if its faulty and then repaying the builder to take it out and put a new one in if it fails within its guarantee period.
