Meeting GCSE Science requirement?

When I first went to college six years ago as a mature student I needed C or above grades in GCSE Maths and English for people born after a certain date they also needed C grade or above GCSE Science.

At the time I didn’t have nor need the Science GCSE so I was fine as I was born after the date specified :)

I'm now looking at a new course but thanks to the ‘introduction of age discrimination legislation on 1st October 2006’ I need:
‘A standard equivalent to a grade C in the GCSE examination in a science subject’

So looks like I'm now taking Biology part time (one evening a week) at my local college on top of the course I want :(
Debts:
Student Loan
Student Overdraft
Cerdit Cards

Not ready to work out the total yet :D

Chemistry is cool (but then I guess I'm bias  )! What course do you want to do OP? If the science subject isn't directly related to your course, ring the college up and ask if they'll bend the rules. Sometimes they will for mature students.

Is it for a teaching course?
Unfortunately the age discrimination act for Employment and training cuts both ways.

Institutions of further and higher education
    23. —(1) It is unlawful, in relation to an educational establishment to which this regulation applies, for the governing body of that establishment to discriminate against a person—
    • (a) in the terms on which it offers to admit him to the establishment as a student;

So if the course requires a 19 yr old to have science, you are required to have it too.

If it is part of the minimum entry requirements then they cannot change the rules due to age under the new law. What they may have is a disclaimer say that those of "non traditionally educated" may have certain exemptions.

GCSE science is common sense but easier! I'd do physics/chemistry as theres less to remember than biology.. but then again im a chemist so might be a bit bias
  • I'm doing exactly the same, I have just started a GCSE Biology with ICS. I will be doing this alongside my degree (I have just completed the first year). I am doing it so I am able to do a PGCE.
