Kwik fit car insurance

Options
Hi All
I took out a car insurance policy with Kwik fit back in FEB 14. I was due to pay by direct debit the sum of £50.15 per month.
The first payment of £47.77 was paid with my debit card via their online site. Due to money problems I feel behind with payments and missed March and April.
During sometime in April they cancelled my policy, which was fair enough they did send me a letter etc.
As of looking at my online backing statement today. They have taken £168.08 from my account. This has not been done by DD but by a card payment. They must have stored my details from the first payment in FEB. At No time didI give permission for any sum to be taken from my account in this way (only the first payment) I have received no letter as to what this amount is for or who they have taken it.
I have called the bank and they said ring Kwik fit insurance. WIth them taking this money the way they have it has left me really short. Kwik fit are closed until monday, I really could do with advice help etc as what to do.
Thanks in Advance

I don't know how much your insurance is in total, but I do know they charge £50 for cancelling the policy and £35 for setting up a monthly payment plan, then you have your missing payments, so this is probably why they charged you the figure quoted.

Since you didn't authorise the second payment, you should be able to get them to refund you, but you will still be liable for the charges and unless you pay it immediately, they may decide to charge you interest on the amount owing until paid in full.

I bet if you read your policy it would say that it is an annual policy- so they cancel a few months in - there would be returned premium charge - admin charges - possible interest charges if it was loaned to you to pay monthly- then cancellation charge and the figures add up to me.
You would have agreed to this when you applied.

If KwikFit refuse to return the money, you can ask your bank for chargeback. However, as pointed out above, you still owe KwikFit some amount for having the policy cancelled early.

Did the April policy cancellation letter make no mention at all of the fact that you still owed them money and how much, plus when and how they'd be collecting this?

By taking out the insurance you agreed to their terms which state that if they are unable to collect any payments they may use the payment card details they hold to collect any amounts due.

Just as an aside, assuming no other policy exists, do not drive your car anywhere.

The police in my area have non insured motorists in their sights and are being very aggressive about enforcing it.
Never argue with an idiot. Especially not this idiot because I'm always right anyway.

If the vehicle is uninsured it must be kept off road and must be declared as such. (SORN)
Failure to do so could result in a £100 fixed penalty

"Continuous Insurance Enforcement" means they no longer have to look for uninsured vehicles, they can simply give you a £100 fixed penalty even if the car is parked on your drive way, unless you apply for SORN. I'm going to guess that Kwik Fit will quickly update the national insurance database that the car is no longer insured, but I'd be quick on with the application.
