Totally confused where to start

Options
Was going to take out contract with Virgin Media.

Filled in all forms in store.

Called by manager that day arranged to call into shop next day.

Went in store next day was told family member who stayed with me in 2011 had left an unpaid bill of £140 and that I could not proceed until debt was cleared.

Paid of debt of £140 which I new nothing about the original debt.

Signed up for new contract.

Next day went in store and cancelled new contract as I felt did not want to deal with them.

Cancelled with no problem.

Was I liable for debt and could/should it be refunded?

You almost certainly weren't liable for the debt.
And you almost certainly aren't going to get it refunded.

I think you'll find it hard to get a refund now as you paid it when asked.

Was the account back in 2011 in any way related to you except the same address? If not, did they only link it to you through the (possible) same surname?

Maybe you could ask said family member for some money towards it?

You probably weren't liable for the debt.
If you were liable, I would've expected them to have been chasing you for the money anyway.

They appear to have decided that they were not going to provide you with the service you wanted unless you paid off the debt... not the same as liability.

I do not think you stand any chance of getting a refund of that £140.
It was a debt owed by someone else which you paid on his behalf because it suited you at the time.

Why don't you mention to this 'family member' that you have kindly paid the £140 he owed to Virgin, and you would now like him to reimburse you?

Yeah I know. I've agreed with Thumbremote before, it certainly does make you question yourself!
