Portable Hard drive or USB stick For Basic Back up

This may seem a simple question to some! I have just returned a Toshiba 1TB portable hard drive which I bought last September, went to use it over the past couple of days and it is faulty. Just wanted to use it as a back up. Any help would be appreciated

Curious heading ... you're certainly not going to get anything like that capacity on a USB stick.
I would suggest looking at the Western Digital 'My Passport Ultra' hard drives. I have six 2TB ones and they are all proving very reliable.... DaveHappily retired and enjoying my 14th year of leisureI am cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.Bring me sunshine in your smile0 -

A snip at about £870 (no typo).

Portable Hard Drive is good for image backups (e.g. lookup macrium reflect free)

USB sticks are good for transferring files from one place to another; can be used for storing files rather than images.0 -
I personally don't think USB sticks are good enough for main backup, although as you have found even portable hard drives can fail so you really need to have two. I do keep copies of important files on a couple of USB sticks, but I have two Transcend Storejet ruggedised hard disks for my full backups (despite oblivion's attachment to WD Passports I had to return the one I bought and have never returned to them).0

Thank you for all the help. I just wasn't sure about the reliability after getting a bad Toshiba Portable hard drive. I usually back things up onto 16/32GB sticks, and thought this would be better. If youcan lie down at night knowing in your heart that you just made someone’s day just a little bit better, you know you had a good day!!0

I used several WD elements portable drives without any problems for years.
Mind you I do treat them like delicate electronic items and don't drop'em or swing them by the cable and always demount the drive though windows before physically removing the cable from the USB port0
