No wonder all the Lapland breaks are so short. I doubt many people could afford to be there for long with those prices for food/drink!

having been to both iceland and tromso.........

i'd agree that iceland has the cheaper cost of living i.e. food, drink etc. but if you are looking to maximise the chances of light sightlings i'd go for tromso

the lights can't be guaranteed but tromso is further north than iceland - if it's all about the light go tromso norwegian air have reasonably priced flights (to oslo and then onto tromso) and it's easy to put together your own hotel + flight + local guide

plus if you eat econmocially i.e. supermarket food, the cost is managable but if you want fine restaurant dining every night it will cost you an arm & a leg

if you're looking for a holiday and seeing the lights is just a bonus iceland potentially has more to do than tromso

happy to answer questions via pm

As a Norwegian friend once remarked:
"I think I will buy a tomato today, but I will need to arrange the finance first".
He moved to Brazil a couple of years later.
Plenty of vids of the northern lights. Better than that lingering "we were ripped-off" feeling.
  • I just thought I'd add on to this thread, I've been searching high and low for northern lights holidays and they are all extortionate like £1500 per person!!

But I found these who are £850 per person AND you get your own luxury cottage!! They are allegedly in one of the best places for northern lights too. Not much availability left this winter mind...
