Fireplace Suites - tips, recommendations?

I've seen these fireplace suites that are fireplaces and surrounding mantelpieces in one set that just plug into the wall. They look very good and I'm going to get one for my Mum's flat but I was wondering if anyone had any tips or advice?
I presume they're just glorified electric heaters so I was wondering if some are more efficient than others?

No, they are all 100% efficient as is all electric heating. One of the big benefits of a flame effect electric fire is the psychology of how warm it makes you feel just seeing the flame dancing about. That alone can help save you money.
Some do have thermostatic control, which give you slightly more options than one that just has the settings for low & high heating.
My advice would be to go for a decent & respected brand, such as Dimplex. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
Most you wil get out of them is 2kw, some 1.3kw
Ideal for flats and as you say, just plug in.
You can go into any fireplace shop in the country and get a suite made up with no problem. You can choose what surround you want, what colour backing and what fire. Sometimes this works out cheaper then a whole suite.
As above said , Dimplex is the better one to go for, Flamerite is another. Some of the cheaper ones, have god damn awful electric fires in them, which I wouldn't give the time of day to. Really bad Chinese made fires with bad flame picture. At least with Dimplex, nearly all of their fires are made over in Ireland, surrounds most probably in Poland.
For the little extra you can pay to design your own, with the colour to suit the rest of the furniture and your colour of trim and fire. Well worth it IMO0 -
Great! Many thanks for the replies. I gives me something to go on.0
