I reckon £5.5 million+ was a fairly easy sell: much better value than wasting it on hospitals like the RVH.:p
Better value than policing many of our other more usual local festivities.

I reckon good value and much of the money spent was spent locally and helps money turn in the economy.[STRIKE]Less is more.[/STRIKE] No less is Less.0 -

I thought it was all great -real shame about the weather though, the Antrim coast in Sunshine would have been a brill advertisement for tourism.
But it shows us Norn Iron folk are the best in the world for standing in the rain.0 -
Jeez, OP, you're being a bit bah humbug! 'A bunch of lycras' - no, actually, 200 of the world's elite cyclists taking part in a once in a lifetime sporting event that has brought incredible good cheer and fun to this part of the world.
I was at it and I can tell you, it was brilliant. Well done to those wo brought it here, organised it and policed it. It was faultless. Aside from the weather at times! Agreed Tara! It went past my house, was so well organised, Police were excellent and a real lifted atmosphere!
My family really enjoyed it, am so glad it all went so well0 -
My Dad (Italian, ex-pat) said to my mum on the phone: "pity about the rain... But the people over here just ignore it - stick on a hat and carry on."
He was impressed by the crowds that turned out in Carrick.0 -

Do you think they wanted to come here of their own accord?
They went where their sponsors told them they were going.
Sure there was a deal on the table for NI, not to mention some back handers0 -
I'll second that. There are people here who are doing an excellent job promoting the place generally.
NI should be self-promoting, it doesn't take a cycling event to raise the profile.
As for the economy, well yes and no.
The coastal route is ranked as one of the top 10 driving roads in Europe, all 22miles of coast hugging black stuff, but that's what it is a driving road.
There are little cycle lanes as it is, no thanks to Kennedy who slashed the money for cycling lanes.
If NI was to invest heavily in cycling infrastructure, then yes, we would see an influx of cycling tourists.0 -
Good grief, there really are some right Victor Meldrews in this country...0
