Have I been conned -direct holiday homes rental

To cut a long story short , paid for a caravan rental for the Easter weekend on Iow, day before Good Friday owner cancelled with a story of his caravan being trashed . Managed to get another rental on the same site and checked out the caravan s
That had supposedly been trashed -it looked fine . We. Are still waiting for the refund of our money .i have had some email contact with the owner and he said he sent a cheque - it still hasn't arrived! He has asked for my bank details but I am reluctant to hand them over to a stranger . Is there anything I can do , there are aome other points that make me think the whole thing is a bit suss ?

If it has happened before with the same owner then it could be a problem . providing your bank details to get funds repaid isn't normally a problem . You can use paypal and send a request for payment protecting your details that way . Was anyone staying in the place you had rented ? if not it would be daft not to let you stay so the trashed story would have been a real one . If my rental was "trashed" I would try to find them another break not just a get on with it yourself attitude . They have lost a easter booking either way just make sure you get your funds back ..good luck
