Is aerlingus better any better than ryanair?

Hi i need some advice please.
I am travelling to dublin from the midlands and i need to check-in a suitcase (probably 20kg).
Ryanair is working out at £38 but i have to pay extra for the checked-in suitcase, the ryaniair website is a little vague about this, but becuase i am travelling in june it would be classed as high season so i think its going to be an extra £35 meaning the total is £72
Aerlingus also fly this route but i have never used them before, there does seem to be an extra charge with them aswell, it says it is 25 euro.
I assume i only pay this baggage fee once for ryanair or aerlingus. Meaning i dont have to pay another £35 or 25 euro on the return flight as well do i?
I have flown ryanair and i know what they are like. They will try and fleece you over even the slightest issue or if your bag isnt correct size or you are 1 ounce overweight!
But what about aerlingus, are they much the same or a better airline to fly with?
Thanks

from the AerLingus site
Baggage fees are based per passenger, per direction.
from the Ryanair site
Checked Baggage - Fees per bag per one way flight
so you need to multiply the price x2
The Aer Lingus flight will be operated by Aer Arran and the planes are small with tiny overhead lockers. Bags would be taken off people, not because the staff are trying to take £s, but because they would not physically fit
I have been flying regularly between Edinburgh and Dublin where these 2 airlines also share the route, have flown with both and for such a short flight I pick whatever fits my times best (with a preference of EI if the times were similar)0 -

Not necessarily. Birmingham-Dublin is shared between Aer Lingus Airbus A320s and Aer Arran ATR72s. Who operates which flight is clearly stated on the Aer Lingus site when booking.
I agree though. OP, do a dummy booking on each airlines site to get a final price with your luggage. Choose the one that's cheapest and best fits your schedule. Very little difference between them especially on a 40 minute hop.0 -
Flew with Aer Lingus in December. Liked the airline and for me, they worked out cheaper and more flight times from MAN to DUB than Ryanair.
Flew out on A320 AM, flew back on ATR72 Prop next day, both flights excellent and service was really good. The ATR was almost brand new, run by Aer Arran, but in AL livery, really comfortable.
For me, it worked out £40 cheaper inc hold luggage, than a Ryanair flight from LPL with luggage.0 -

It really comes down to price and convenience.
Aer Lingus headed down the LCC route many years ago, possibly because it's 25% owned by Ryanair but probably because FR was killing it on prices across the Irish Sea.
For me Ryanair still wins every single time on price.0 -
For a short flight it doesn't really matter too much but for what its worth I've flown both on business and detest Ryan Air with a passion. I find the whole experience, from the bum fights for seats, chairs that don't move, un-flexible baggage rules (I have a laptop and handbag on business, can't take both onboard, but can be stopped and hold up everyone else while shovving one in the other, so I'm still taking on the same amount of luggage...but don't stop all those with 2-3 duty free bags), and last but not least, squeezing two wheel chair passengers into the middle of the plane, boarding them last, barely being able to get the on-board wheelchair down the aisle and making them a general spectacle. Common sense being board them first, near the front or rear seats.
AirLingus on the other hand I've never had any issue with, perhaps because they fly from a closer airport to my home its less stressful to begin with, but based on a small cost difference, I would choose them every time over Ryan Air.Feb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

The people that moan about Ryanair are those that don't think the rules apply to them, or don't bother to read them in the first place. In the given situation I would pick whichever airline is cheapest, and stick to their rules.0

Thanks everyone for your help
I am going to end up just going with ryanair because the flight times and price is a little bit better for me
Thanks once again0 -
I fly Edinburgh to Dublin regularly and have never had a low priced flight from Aer Lingus. Flight with Ryanair last week was just under £30 return (including taxes). No checked in baggage.0
