They were selling huge £1 bowls of red chillies too, and root ginger - I love chillies AND ginger but what on earth would I do with that quantity?

Make your own sweet chilli with ginger sauce?
I use (roughly, depends on how hot you like things...)
2 tablespoon of sugar dissolved in juice of 1 lemon
then chop up 2 large chillies very finely (take seeds out if you don't like it spicy)
2 tsp salt (or less if you like it spicy)
    2 cloves garlic
a good knob of finely grated ginger
mix it all up, you need to let the tastes mix preferably overnight and then you can add more or less of anything depending on how like it.

    Pickled chillies?
wash, clean, de-seed chillies, and then just pickle them in vinegar, good for an extra kick in salad.

Chilli oil- very lush for salad dressings, or use a little for stir fries and doesn't need freezer space

Sometimes a bit of ginger is good with carrot and coriander soup, use less coriander and then add a touch of cream to it to get the ginger taste out.

I wonder if you could make your own versions of the 'lazy chillies' and 'lazy ginger' that you can buy? Sterilised jar, finely chopped/pureed chilli or ginger and a coating of oil over the top to keep it fresh and store it in the fridge? It probably wouldn't last *that* long but it might be worth a go and if it doesn't work it'll still be cheaper than buying a jar ...
  • Hi all,
You can dry chillies really easily. Just thread some string through the stalks or tie each stalk and hang them in a warm dry place for a while and they keep for ages. I am growing my own in the greenhouse and will be hanging mine in the kitchen for easy access as and when.

Not sure but you can freeze ginger. We buy a big chunk & freeze it and then grate it from frozen :)

I chop up ginger put in a jam jar and then cover it with runny honey. It keeps in the fridge. You need to stir it as 'juice' does come out of the ginger and thins the honey so stir regularly to mix up the honey which sinks to the bottom of the jar. Last for ages.
Bananas and all other fruit I chop and put into the freezer then add to milk or pop to make a smoothy or frozen slush type drink. Also add some of the ginger when I remember. Always tastes good.
