I was at the market today ( walthamstow market! unbelievable bargains, londoners you have to go) and it was times like tihs when I wished I could get MSE on my phone!
Stall one. 6 coconuts for a pound.
Could I have bought and used these for anything , ie saved them freezed them?
Stall 2 4 pineapples for a pound.
Ditto, could I have saved these in any form?
I really didnt know so i left them there, but would be handy to know for future reference

Pineapples I would definitely have gone for as they are very easy to freeze and freeze really well (obviously chopped up first)That's Numberwang!0

would have bought both and :
drunk the coconut "milk" - delicious
grated the rest, dried some a little and made coconut cookies for the freezer, made a coconut granita/ice for the freezer
may dried some out either further to keep in the cupboard for thai curries
coconut cake
and pineapple ice cream
think I am going to go to a market tomorrow and find some coconuts!0 -

This is why dehydrators were invented!
Dried coconut and pineapple slices. Both yummy as they are, but good for other stuff too.Softstuff- Officially better than 0070 -
I used to live in North London and I really miss the markets.
I used Enfield, Edmonton and Woodgreen shopping city and we always had wonderful fresh fruit and veg. It was amazing what you could get at the end of the day!
Noticed a big difference in the market when I moved back hom as everything was just under supermarket price, or even dearer and called 'local produce'!I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0 -
i would have bought both then came home and figured out what to do with them!0

I agree Luxor4t.... I live in Edmonton and the market here is really good. Been such a boon since trying to live the MS way... You need to be choosy over some things but still it's fab what you can get for your moneyApril 2021 Grocery Challenge 34.29 / 2500

Walthamstow market is quite astounding when you walk along, there are so many fruit and veg bargains to be had, its just getting it all home and storing it that can be tricky.Grocery budget in 2023 £2279.18/£2700Grocery budget in 2022 £2304.76/£2400Grocery budget in 2021 £2107.86/£2200Grocery budget in 2020 £2193.02/£2160Saving for Christmas 2023 #15 £ 90/ £3650

Hi - just came across this thread! I have the same issue with bulk-buying at a cheap London market (only in my case it's Lewisham) then having to work out what to do with it all

From last week's visit I still have most of a massive bag of bananas, it was a huge heaped-up bowl for £1, and although I've eaten about 4 of them and made a smoothie with 2 others (plus some strawberries) I was intending to make some banana muffins on Tues but didn't get around to it!
Also picked up a large carrier bag full of carrots, also £1, haven't used them yet but will be popping down there tomorrow so will probably pick up a couple of bunches of coriander and make soup
They were selling huge £1 bowls of red chillies too, and root ginger - I love chillies AND ginger but what on earth would I do with that quantity?
The main problem I have is ZERO space in the freezer (can't even fit an ice-cube tray in there, never mind any more "stuff") so I need to do some careful planning over the weekend for next week's lunches.
