Ancient National Savings Certificate

Rummaging through some old documents I came across a tatty little booklet that I thought might be a WW2 ration book but is actually entitled "National Savings Certificate Book", has my wife's (maiden) name written on the back, and I think is circa 1970's. Stuck to one of the pages is a nifty little certificate, a "2nd Index-Linked Issue National Savings Certificate" with a face value of £100.

I would guess this was bought as a gift or investment for my wife as a child. Does anyone know if it is still likely to be of any value, and if so how it should be redeemed in this Internet age?

Thanks,
Kess

Try link below to get a current value

    http://nsandi.com/products/ilsc/calculator.jsp

though if the certicate is as old as it sounds, you may well have to ring up their helpline on

    0845 964 5000

to get the value, plus details of how to cash in.

The name's Bond, National Savings Bond. :)
  • I found one of the old green national savings sertificate books dating back to the 80's. phoned the 0500 007 007 number and no problem, they're sending out a form that you fill in and return with the book and they'll work out the value and pay you. Simple. thanks a lot.
  • Hello,
I recently found a couple of books titled National Savings Certificate book that my grandparents bought when I was a child.

I'm now in Canada and wondered if there is a website I can go to, to find out who to contact to see if the books have any value.

The date stamp says Mar 30, 1965 and both were purchased for 1 pound.

I'd hate to spend more in a long distance call than they're worth....

thanks for any help you can give me.

Yes they will have a value. If you e-mail NSI

    http://www.nsandi.com/contact-us

you should get an answer. I don't think there will be a calculator online for ones so old

Problem may be that the cost of negotiating a sterling cheque (probably what you will get) may well be more than they are worth

Are they in your name or your grandparents - or don't know? A further complication
  • For very old certificates it worked at little different at that time.
At the end of the 5 year term rather than being automatically renewed as they are now they all went onto what what was then called a "common extension rate" - which was rather/very low as I dimly recall.
So at the end of the 5 years you had to make a postive action to re-invest them in the then current issue of NS certificates - all done at the Post Office.
Furthermore you were NOT reminded that this was about to happen.

    ....now
where was that other thread on here which had people ranting and venting on how the banks behaviour is outrageous by cutting interest rates after a bit to a very low value and how the government should prevent it.
    The government started it!
  • thanks for your reply - one book has my name on it and the other has my brothers with my grandparents old address. Hopefully that isn't a problem as they have both passed on.

I have sent a message to the website you gave me so I'll see what comes of it....hopefully it will be worth persuing? thanks for the heads up...I'll check with the bank to see how much of a service charge there would be..

thank you for all your help!

Hopefully that isn't a problem as they have both passed on.

I would expect there may be some id checking.
I'm sure you wouldn't want the bank to give the money to just anyone with the same name.
Good luck with it, but I would expect you'd have to prove id and address.
