The houses have been built at Ganavan (well half of them anyway) The Pavillion is no more and the Rare breeds park has been sold of and broken up for development land too. icon9.gif

I'm really sorry to hear that (we had an annual pass for the Rare Breeds park for years) but at the same time can't help but feel that any house built where the Rare Breeds Park was will have stunning views as will those at Ganavan.

Stayed at Trallee Bay this year in Benderloch, only a 10min journey into Oban so went for a nosy at Ganavan, so sad to see the beautiful pavillion gone and the houses up, but got talking to a local and they said building work has come to a halt  that makes it even worse, if they've torn the place apart and not even managing to sell. What a waste i could see myself holidaying there year after year.
What did they do with all the lovely animals at the rare breed park then??? That was a fantastic day out i hope they've all been re-homed in a similar environment because they all seemed so happy and had plenty of space to roam.
:pwould like to make it known it is not a DHN, she's dancing :p

If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.:A

I paid a visit to Ganavan last Sept weekend, stayed here:
http://www.ardoran.co.uk/ I have no connection to this place btw, but I do recommend it.

Are you saying the caravan site including wooden chalets are gone? The pavilion was closed when we went, there were accommodation rooms to the front of the pavilion with vista views! I have done many dives around this area, including all around Mull, Iona ect. magic place, also amazing some of the the beaches you can only access via a boat.

Back to Ganavan Sands, many times launched boat there to pop round to dive the Breda just off Trallee Bay, motor back to Ganavan to de-gass, have a bite to eat in the pavilion, have tanks filled with air at the wee dive shop next to pavilion prior to returning to Breda. be a damn shame if all this has gone to development!!!

For those that may be interested, Ganavan was constructed for use during WW2, the slipway is the original where they used to haul Catalina and Sunderland flying boats for servicing/repairs. There used to be a huge hanger for works to be carried out directly on the opposite side of slip and car park, I suspect there were many more building around there during this period. I have only viewed pictures of hangar, it was long gone when I paid my first ever trip to GS.

I noticed in Sept, a cairn with plaque attached was there to commemorate all who worked at the around Oban This area was a huge war time base during WW2. There is a very good book titled "Hebridies at War" makes good reading with many pictures of Ganavan, I think the pavilion was there at this time?

Sorry to babble on, history lesson over:A
