Travel from Cornwall to Weymouth easily on the train with children?

I wonder if anyone can help. I need to try to get from Cornwall to Weymouth with the children on the train.
I have looked at the rail website and it states it takes approximately 4 hours which by the time I have reached my destination it will be time to turn around again.
Does anyone have any other options. It will not be possible to travel by car.
Many thanks

Where about in Cornwall?
If train doesn't suit I imagine bus is the only other option and it's likely to be longer I'd have thought.
Have you looked at getting cheap overnight accommodation in Weymouth?0 -
First things first, a free two month family railcard might save you a wedge on the train fare if you're travelling before the end of July.

That might free up some cash for a cheap hotel. Then the trip becomes a mini-holiday.0 -
you can change at bristol temple meads - plymouth & penzance trains stop there & there is s weymouth train from there (takes ages but a very pretty route)proud gran to 4 lovely boys and one little girl0

You could travel to Taunton by train and then join a Berry's trip (only on certain dates though)

Other than by car, the train will be quicker than coaches. Why are you trying to do it in one day?0

I've done a similar journey before and it's not easy to travel from the south coast into Cornwall. There will certainly be at least one change, if not more. Add in the factor of children and it becomes even more difficult. Sorry I couldn't help more

The trouble is firstly that trains in Cornwall are slow .... then you get off at Exeter and have to wait for a train going in a different direction.
Just Truro to Exeter's 2 hours 40 minutes at best.... and then you're only half way.0 -
Another vote for an overnight B&B here!

Any youth hostels there? They often offer cheap family rooms. Is it affordable to you to stay the night before or the night of arrival? Make a weekend of it.0
