Online activities only work properly after a restart

I have an HP Pavilion laptop running Windows Vista. Doing online tasks works properly after a restart but then starts playing up.

Webpages will only load after refreshing several times or trying to open the same page in several tabs. The pictures online often don't display properly.

Checking email using the Windows Live Mail program often results in an error message saying "unable to send or receive messages" to Hotmail or Yahoo. Again, it will usually work after several attempts to sync email.

Even antivirus sometimes struggles to update.

History in IE9 never works.

This has been going on for several months so I can't use System Restore. I have a Samsung tab and that seems to be working fine. Any help would be appreciated.

Back up and clean install? Full model number of machine? How much RAM is installed?

Do you mean a factory reset? I wanted to avoid that.

    It's a DV7-1003EA. There is 4GB RAM.

reset ie to defaults under tools, internet options, advanced

    disable any browser addons

check your antivirus/firewall isn't interfering with browsing

scan with malwarebytes, clean up temp files with ccleaner - both available from filehippo.com

    try a wired connection

I've got IE9 and Google Chrome so I assume it's not a browser problem. My Samsung tab works fine so I assume it's not a wireless router problem.

How will I know if the antivirus or firewall is interfering? Isn't it risky to switch them off?

Browser junk can affect many browsers at once, reset and see

by disabling it, particularly any 3rd party firewalls. how depends what you've got

no, you're unlikely to get infected going to google to test

wired is to rule out a problem with your machines wireless connection, not the router
