Final demand off Atlantic.

I was with Atlantic for my gas and electric, finished with them in October 2004.
When I finished with them, they said they owed me £128. It took until January this year to get the cheque. the wording on the letter attached to the cheque stated. In full and final settlement of your account.

Today 30th of April I had a letter off them wanting £72.83 within 7 days. Or they will pass the account to a third party dept collection agency. And all costs will be payable by me.

They go on to state. That this is the last reminder I will receive. In fact it's the first time they have contacted me about this.

There are no fact or figures to substantiate their claim, only this intimidating letter.

Anyone with knowledge of how I should proceed about this matter.

Thanks in advance.

Ralph.

If it were me, I would photocopy the "final settlement" missive and compose a letter to them asking why they want the money, telling them that this is the first I have heard from them since that final settlement. I'd send them by a delivery method that required a signature, keeping a receipt for costs. Opening time on Tuesday, I would phone them and ask what it's all about and tell them that a covering letter had already been posted. If I didn't get an adequate response from the original call handler, I would ask to speak to a supervisor, and, if possible, keep going up the scale until a decision maker is reached. Stick to the facts at all times and do not get emotional. Complaining is often about persistence as well as being right.

  • Thanks NigeWick

Yes, I will post a letter asking them why, I owe this money.
And why have they sent a letter, the Mafia would be proud of.
If indeed I do owe this amount, do you think perhaps, I have the right to pay it at £10 a month.
    After all it's their mistake.

    Thanks again.

    Ralph,
I suspect that if you plead poverty and make a reasonable offer of payment over a few months, they will accept it rather than "set the dogs on you." If it comes to it, just ask and see what they say. As long as you keep in touch with them, they will more likely be understanding. It's when people ignore their letters etc that companies tend to get the hump.

    Again thanks

Yes, I think I will make them wait after all, it's all their fault.
They told me they owed me £128. And made me wait three months for it.
And the mafia stile of the letter as got my back up, so I think I will make it as awkward as I, can for them.

    Ralph.
