markup language page

Someone has asked me to update their website, just need to add a bit of text. I said I would thinking it was like other websites I've helped with, just sticking a bit of text composed in word into it, saving it and bobs your uncle,

However this site is all markup language and stuff. In theory I could just insert the text somewhere and it would presumably pick up the formatting if I replace something else (its all CSS etc). The problem is it won't let me edit it. Can someone explain to me in simple words how I can edit it. I have gone in with the admin username and password, but the text isn't editable. thanks

Liz

I don't know how to do it, but I also wouldn't be offering to update websites because of that. From what you say it sounds like the previous ones you have done are very simple, probably the Wordpress type, but if you want to do something more complex you really need to learn how to do it properly (and on your own website rather than ruin someone else's). I'd suggest that for now you tell the website owner that they should find someone else to do their updates.

    Thanks

I didn't want to nor did I offer. Someone just asked me to stick a few words of text into it. It's a very simple, old fashioned looking site so needs a proper developer to completely redo it. Not something I have the slightest inclination to learn, - I just thought I was missing something simple to make the page editable, insert my few words, then save and close, update the website and that's it. I've no intention of doing anything else at all to it!

They'll just have to go back to the developer to do it then. Thanks again.

Almost all websites are markup (HTML) in their output. Some sites contents are just HTML, some allow admin to input the contents in other ways and it converts it to HTML, others store the site in another format and generate the HTML on the fly as a page is requested.

How you update/maintain it will depend on which option has been used.

Assuming its a traditional flat file HTML you would just connect to the server with FTP, download the .html page that you wish to alter and insert the text. Assuming its to have the same formatting as the rest of the page that should be all. If you want to give it different formatting you'd need to add the relevant CSS/ class to it or add the relevant HTML

If you use Notepad++ you should be able to open the file via ftp, update as required and save.

I wouldn't do it on a live site, though, unless I knew what I was doing.
