Getting MOT early

Im selling my car and thought it would sell better with a new 12 month MOT.
My current MOT doesn't expire until August, can I MOT my car now?
If it should fail will I still be able to use my car bearing in mind my current MOT doesn't run out till August?

    Yes you can MOT it.

If it fails the current valid MOT still applies.

You can of course still be pulled by a copper just up the road from the MOT station whether it has passed or failed.

    Would the insurance check this?

I guess it's all 'online' now so someone could check the last MOT against the car?

What does it matter if they do?

This has been done to death dozens of times. Insurance isn't automatically invalidated purely because of no MOT. For details, search other threads.

To the OP, post number 2 has it spot on. The only slight downside is that you effectively lose 3 months or so worth of MOT by doing it now - assuming it passes, new MOT will be valid from the day it passed, it can't be future-dated by more than a month.

And to pre-empt the other arguments - and again, as post number 2 correctly points out - you can be done for having an unroadworthy vehicle at any time, irrespective of the status of your MOT certificate.

Thought I'd dip my toe in dangerous water, as I think I'm missing something. I always thought you could only renew up to 1 month before the MOT to retain your anniversary (which is slightly different issue I know - i.e. you could end up with an MOT certificate that lasts 13 months). However, according to the govt web, it says you can :-
" renew your MOT up to a month before it expires. The earliest date you can get your vehicle tested is printed on the pass certificate." Am i assuming that the "earliest date" bit is only if you need to retain your MOT anniversary as the same, or have they changed the rules?

Also noticed they have an MOT text reminder service which sends 3 texts - costs £1.50. Never used it though.

Correct, the one month bit is purely to maintain the anniversary and give you some time to get it done before it expires. You can have an MOT done as often as you are willing to pay for.

The car fails an MOT and therefore not road worthy.

Just an excuse not to pay out
