Legal Claimline Ltd Manchester trying to charge £720 to cancel claim!

I have recently found out that a PPI claim I was making through Legal Claimline Ltd, Manchester was pointless as I had no PPI insurance. I advised them to stop and forget it but they then said that I was liable for all the work they had done and sent me a bill for £720!
I explained that I was saving them money as if they had carried on they would have got nothing anyway but this didn't make any difference.
Can they do this?
Has anyone else come across this type of rip off? £720 to make a phone call and possibly send a letter is a bit much, I wouldn't expect that from a solicitor. I have no intention of paying this as I believe that they are conning me. I had asked for a copy of their terms that I have allegedly signed but they have not sent anything yet.
I am tempted to sign the original forms and let them find out the hard way that the claim is pointless but now worried in case they pursue it further. I am with debt management as it is and there is no way I can afford to pay.
Any advice appreciated!

Why are you cancelling with them if you have no PPI?
If all their "worK" comes to naught you won't have to pay them anyhow if you signed a no win, no fee contract.
Why didn't you keep a copy of the contract you signed?
Did you tell them you are in Debt Management? If you did, they shouldn't really have taken on your case without informing you that any PPI redress would likely be offset against your unpaid debt.0 -
The FAQs on their web site say cancellation costs between £150-250

Not sure if that's a genuine pre estimate of loss for posting a few template letters !Ex forum ambassador

"What happens if during the process I am found not to have PPI on my loan or found not to have been mis-sold PPI?
If the claim is carried to its conclusion and is not successful, you will not be charged for any work carried out on your behalf."0 -
Is the issue that you do not have PPI or that you are in an IVA (or equivalent) and are not eligible to receive the refund? The latter would explain the fee.0

I am only in a basic payment plan not IVA. I found a letter from the company I was claiming against and it said there was no ppi on the account. I thought I was doing Legal Claimline a favour by telling them before they wasted any time. When the snotty jobsworth told me they would charge I thought she was joking! It cannot be lawful to offer a no win no fee then try and charge for doing less work than they may have done for nothing! Definitely taking this further as it is just a blatant attempt to intimidate me.0
