Conservatory polycarbonate roof to stop sun overheating

I don't think anything other than a structural roof will make a conservatory comfortable on a hot sunny day. My conservatory gets unbearably hot on a sunny spring day. In the summer even with the windows and door open you can't sit in it really.
Not strictly true. There are products on the market now that significantly reduce the solar gain in a conservatory. If you put a structural roof on a conservatory, it is no longer a conservatory.0 -
We have a Pilkington Activ Blue roof with about a 20mm argon filled cavity. All windows are 20mm argon filled and we have reflective blinds on the roof and venetian blinds on the windows. We're north east facing and so far this year the max is about 28. Throw a couple of small windows open and it easily drops to 21ish.
Whatever you do, south facing will get hot, but glass is the way to go. Better insulated and quieter in the rain.0 -
Nice one spammy ronnie, why would any first poster simply praise a single company?

To the op, taking this from the basic point of view, initially simple opaque poly triple wall is the most cost effective route.
I have no experience of the winter thermal ins of conservatories, I know a lot of technical guidance is available but, given I have a summer only detached conservatory, about 6.5mtrs x 4.5 mtrs I can say that over the last 3 years even with simple tri wall poly, it doesn't over heatI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
First summer with our North East facing conservatory. We have the blue tinted glass roof. It was wonderful, left the door intro the house open, successfully warming the house. A couple of open windows gave a through flow of air.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.
(Pity they are mangled by this autocorrect!)0 -
Sorry to jump in here, but I'd like a glass roof on mine. Sound of rain on that poly is deafening!
I have 4 sheets approx 1x3 metres, always thought it would cost a fortune for glass?0 -

I agree with you on the noise, but I actually like it. There's something satisfying about sitting under a poly roof that amplifies the sound whilst staying dry and warm:D:D
But yes it does simply come down to cost, glass is of course better.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

We built ours with planitherm low e glass all round which is supposed to reflect a lot of the heat back out and my mum has a polycarbonate roof on her one( we even have a large opening roof vent and bi-folds), both south facing and both completely uninhabitable on hot days. The best advice I have seen was on a programme with the beeney woman in where the couple had electronic blinds on the outside of the glass which would prevent the glass from getting hot, I would never consider putting a glass structure on a south facing garden ever again0
