warning re. maestro card from 'apprentice'

when is a good deal not a good deal?
when you have to work so hard to cash it in...
i just used my maestro £5 'gift card' from the 3-m 'apprentice' promotion
but had to try 2 different stores and make a line of people wait 10 minutes while the cashier figured it out.
turns out you cannot pay for some of a purchase with another card (visa etc.)if you also use this. the machine would accept only cash + gift card.
once we figured out what was wrong it went through ok. no one seems to know what to do with these cards as they have never seen them before.
