I'd love to know how much they save me.
    See http://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/1127.aspx

One prescribed item (£8.05) per month would cost £96.60 so one extra item would just go over the £104 cost of a PPC saving you 65 pence... each additional saves you more.

So calculate how many prescribed items you have each year, take away 13 and multiply by £8 for a rough calculation.

My chemist never ask to see or check my PPC although I always take it just in case. I do 12 months by DD and then cancel after its paid for. For some reason i always seem to have a lot of meds left over even tohugh i take them every day so have a two ro three month gap before i sign up for a new one.

I currently have 5 regular prescriptions every month so saves me over £300 a year.

Make sure you check if you can get a medical exemption card , certain conditions and meds can qualify you , my hub has one as is on thyroxine (?) for life - however having severe asthma and needing inhalers didn't qualify

Definitely, always ask you pharmacist or GP if you have a chronic condition, some do qualify for a medical exemption (your gp has to sign a form to confirm it though).

Also always check if you qualify for any other exemption e.g. Tax credits, low income, income support, ESA, jobseekers' allowance etc. Ask your pharmcist for the 'help with health costs' booklet. More info here:
    http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthcosts/Pages/Prescriptioncosts.aspx

To confirm what has been said:
    - Not all pharmacies sell PPC, however all should be abele to give you the form to apply via post + info on applying via phone or online.
    - If planning to buy a PPC (or thinking about it) ask for an NHS receipt (not a till receipt) for all nhs items you paid for. When aplying for a ppc you are allowed to backdate it by one month and hence can claim back what you paid if you keep your nhs receipt(s).
    - Choice of 3 month or 12 month card, the latter has the option to pay by direct debit. If at some point you no longer need the medicines or qualify for another exemption you can cancel the card and the NHS Business Authority will refund the unused amount of time left on your card. you will need to send the card back and a letter explaining why you no longer need it.
    More info at:
    http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthcosts/Pages/PPC.aspx

    Any more questions, please ask.
  • I wasnt aware until a pharmacist advised me that you can get a free NHS medical exemption certificate if you have certain ongoing conditions for e.g: thyroid problems, diabetes and mobility problems.

you collect the form from you GP and tick box and sign and your doctor sends it off and you receive your card back in about 3 weeks.

just thought i would pass this on.

NB Patients with diabetes are only eligible if the diabetes is treated by medication

Sorry to revive an old thread, but if you renew a previous PPC, does the certificate number remain the same?

As I know you can use it for a prescription before the card arrives, but they ask for the number and it doesn't give you this when you apply online.

Just tell the pharmacist you've left it at home, they'll mark the script as "proof not seen" and it should get checked the other end.

My chemist has always been fine with this, but if yours isn't, pay & ask for a recepit. You can them claim back the cost.

Just to clarify you have to ask for an FP57 receipt, not a till receipt, this can only be issued at the time of purchase, it can't be issued retrospectively.

Taken from the PPc site HERE
"If you have to pay a prescription charge while you are waiting for your PPC, you cannot get a refund unless you get an NHS receipt form (an FP57) and your new certificate covers the date you paid the charge"

Like you I have never had a problem not having my card with me and I've also collected meds 10 mins after renewing my card online.
