Retrieve Money from Travelex Card

Hi,

I have under €50 remaining on a prepay Travelex credit card. I would like to retrieve the money as they take €3 every month I do not use the card. I'm looking for advice on the best way to get the money. I'm open to suggestions but here is what I have considered:

* Take out as much GBP as I can from a cash machine and write off the rest.
* Send myself a PayPal payment and take the loss in commission and exchange rate.
* Buy something from a Euro website and pay high postage.

I don't mind if I get GBP notes, EUR notes, money in my bank, credit on PayPal/Amazon, etc or anything else as long as it is something I will use someday and something that doesn't leak a certain amount per month.

Thanks for reading and for any advice you can give me.

All your suggestions seem fine to me - can you not use it in a high street store that accept Euros. I know you can pay in Euros in my local Poundland.

I didn't think of that and it might be a good idea. Thanks!

The card is a Mastercard isn't it? If so you can use it anywhere that takes MC - it doesn't need to be priced in Euro. The card will convert your sterling purchase to Euro before debiting it

Yeah, probably at a horrendous exchange rate.

Yes but they won't be able to charge cards in euros

The exchange rate is just the mastercard rate, which is very good, but travelex adds 5.75% on top of that

However ATM fee subject to the same charge

If you can go to the Ulster Bank Euro ATM on Bishopsgate in London, you should be able to withdraw €40 cash. If there is more than €47 you should then be able to withdraw £5 from an ATM that has fivers

Otherwise you could get £30 at a normal ATM

The card is a Visa Electron, in case that makes a difference.

Would I be better off sending myself the money on paypal? I think I can send it in Euros and avoid charges from the card. Paypal would then take a commission and exchange it to GBP. Would that work out well for me?
