Which courier to send a mattress?

Options
Hi,

We need to return a mattress we bought on eBay. The seller is a business and are happy to take the return as the item is unused, but have arranged their own courier collection.

On discussing with husband just now, he mentioned that when the mattress was originally delivered the delivery man was just a man with a white van rather than a proper courier.

Now I know that this is their own deliver person and is legitimate, but I had expected the return would be with a proper courier that was fully trackable etc (to ensure full Paypal cover just in case).

So, I'm a bit worried now?

I've had a look to see prices for arranging our own courier to return the item but can't find one that will take a super king mattress.

Does anyone know of any companies that would?

Thanks.

  • If you can roll and seal it, like when it comes from shops, you can send it through https://www.parcelmonkey.co.uk , though it'll cost a lot.

I wouldn't know where to start, I think it's impossible for me to do that :(

It is fully sealed in protective strong plastic packaging so that shouldn't be an issue.

It's more the size. Someone must offer such a service?

Oh the joys of purchasing something so big and trying to return it under the DSR.

You are better off ringing around trying to find a man with a van, I've rung around lots of couriers in the past with out success or they charge stupid prices.

Or try an auction delivery style website.

    Something like this...http://www.uship.com/uk/

    I wish you luck.

Also if mattress didn't come rolled then DO NOT roll it up, bend it or mistreat it in any way! Otherwise your supplier may not issue a full refund.

The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....
  • Could you ask the seller if their courier could provide a tracking number? A business which regularly sends things like mattresses is likely have a deal with their courier based on regular custom, but trying to send a mattress as a one-off would be prohibitively expensive (unless you happen to live close to the delivery address).

I would try as someone else has suggested https://www.parcelmonkey.com or https://www.myparceldelivery.com or some other website that sells courier services. Often they will sell services from well known couriers much cheaper than direct. You can put in the dimensions and it will tell you the prices.

Also just because it was delivered in a man with a white van does not mean it was a courier. Some couriers use their own vehicles or rental vehicles. There might me some kind of sign on the address label what courier was used.

Are you sure it wasn't myhermes? When I get a delivery from them, it is always a man in either his car or an unmarked van. I have returned using them (seller sets it up) and have had some kind of receipt that they have signed or stamped when collecting from me.

OP, I don't understand why you do not want to allow the seller to provide their own courier.

If you do that, and get a receipt at the time of collection, your responsibility for the mattress ends when the thing is collected from you.
