Bought car with faulty engine - dealer refuses to return money!

You seem to think that legislation is all encompassing and clarifies issues. If it did, we wouldn't need lawyers, the courts, judges and juries. For every complaint, there is an argument and more money for the legal systems wheels to get greased.0

OP one solution i said earlier about letting them fix it, as well as emissions and compression test get a fault code scan - new cars have hundreds of wires and numerous connectors controlling the engine management that can easily be damaged by clumsy engine/clutch fitting.
A replacement engine on a newer car definitely won't increase it's resale value, insisting on paperwork (maybe from an independent garage of your choice) showing everything tested and within manuafacturer's spec would be a workable compromise imo.0 -
My concern is that if it was definitely rattling before you bought it, the dealer may not be good for a quality. A lot of the big names are just as dodgy as the back-street grease monkeys, just a lot better at the bull!!!!.
On the other hand, new clutch and timing belts, water pump and full service on a decent engine could save you £1000 plus on future maintenance.0 -
Didn't realize there were so many replies... For some reason I wasn’t receiving email updates.
Anyway, the engine got replaced. Collected the car yesterday evening. Drove around a bit – what a joke! It now drives like an old banger - vibrations, rattling, creaking. None of this was there before. Left it with "A Car 2 Go" again – they will take it back to the garage that replaced the engine. They had chosen a small 2 men place in Aylesbury (probably it was cheapest). Really loosing hope that they will ever put this car to a good working order.
Regarding the engine, they provided an invoice from a scrapyard. It only mentions year and mileage. No VIN or anything else. Will try to ring the scrapyard on Monday and check if they have more info on the donor car.0 -

When I get it back in an acceptable condition, I'm definitely planning to get it inspected by an official (or at least a specialist) garage, even if I have to pay for this myself.0 -

You cannot possibly legislate for every possible scenario that protects both buyer and seller. Some areas of soga can be made clearer, but frankly we're never gonna get what you are wanting.0 -
The Yanks have managed it with their Lemon Laws0

Yes, great example, the Yanks with their bullet proof legislation, laws and guides that means all lawyers have shut up shop!0

OP, have a look for the engine number (not VIN), you'll need it anyway for updating your V5C.0
