I've got a work contract for 6 months starting in a couple of weeks, and the plan is (once I find digs), to travel (light) via train on a monday morning, get to work via bus or taxi, and use my push bike to get to and from work, before getting a bus or taxi back to station on friday afternoon.
Other than spare room dot co dot uk are there any other websites I should be using.
How quickly do good places go? How reasonable is it to expect to be able to leave stuff over weekend? (I want to leave all my clothes and wash them thursday leaving them drying in my room, ready for the following week)
Is it better to rent where the land lord isn't living in situe? (Avoids OCD issues ?)
Why should I pay £150 for someone to check out my references? (They are going to take another £3K off me between now and December, so it smacks of money grabbing)
If I rent a room for 7 days, should I expect that my wife should be able to share the room, for a few weekends in the summer? (rather than me get train home, she come for a long weekend to visit the Capital) - Alot of the adverts say, "Couples: No" Can I pretty much ignore this as it's occassional? :rotfl:

Well, so far, I've been working in Hemel for 7 days, and have viewed 7 places, of which I'm probably being a bit picky, but only 1 I felt comfortable with, but they rejected me, for erm being too old.0

You may find that a problem arises with people who are using the Rent a Room scheme. You can rent to one person only - no couples.
The other issue with couples will arise when the owner wants to sell the house, as they may be liable to CGT. This does not arise with only one lodger.0 -

Well, I've yet to view a house where the owner had less 2 lodgers, and 6 of them were renting to 5 to 7 people, (all paying £400 to £550 a month). But my wife and I have agreed, that if she does come down, we will book into a hotel or B&B.0 -

OK, so they're not using the Rent A Room scheme, then.0 -
House number 8 looks good. Move in Monday. Just me and the owner. Hopefully we will get along fine. I probably will have to not be too much of a slob. I get my own bathroom, as he has an en-suite. Room is big enough to make a mess, and area is nice and close to factory. Price is a bit at the top side, but after viewing the others, I'm happy enough.0

Glad you got this sorted. Thanks for the update.0
