Council Tax Benefit

Does anyone know how council tax benefit is worked out? We have a mortgage so would get no HB. I just want to work out wether we would get any help with CT or not.

Does your council have a benefits section on their website? Ours does and also has a quick calculator on there so you can put in what you get and it works out if you would be entitled.

It depends on your income and savings.

I don't know anything about the income, but any savings you have over £6000 reduce your brnefit until it gets to £16000 when you will get no CT Benefit.

Hopefully someone will come along soon who knows more than me!

never used it for council tax buy i think entitledto.co.uk works it out.

otherwise, it's based on allowing set amounts depending on who's in the houseold, comparing this to income and then tapering the difference.

Do you know of a website that tells you how to work it all out. I saw one and can't find it now!

No, I mean a site which tells you all benefit allowances and explains how they are worked out. I remember it but can't find it.

I have a suspision that each council has it's own secret system. I don't say this lightly, I have several friends who have been treated differently. One working 16 hours in receipt of CTC and WTC gets an allowance (basically with more income that the next person) and a widow on widows pension only amounting £83 a week and was denied.

The rules are standard with a few exceptions - most likley the widow with widows pension either had savings or had another source of income.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
