Renting accommodation

Can anyone give me a bit of advice. My 17 year old dd is moving away in sept to study a full time dance and drama course. She is looking to rent a house with three other students. Because of the nature of the course and the borough it is based all the students are eligible to claim housing benefit, but they are not entitled to any other student finance. Can anyone advise me what students do when obtaining accomodation will the tenancy agreement be in there own names or will they need to be in parents. My dd will be 18 at the end of aug, but will be taking out tenancy before then. I am worried as I currently rent my home and do not have a great credit history, so do not want to screw things up for her.

You'd be better to ask on the housing board as it seems quite a technical issue, but I think someone under 18 is not allowed to be a party to a tenancy agreement.

I believe that the students will be on the tenancy agreement as joint tenants, making them all responsible for the entire renting cost.

Parents are often used as guarantors though, meaning they're responsible if the students can't pay. I wouldn't have thought your credit history should be a problem though.
